Sustainable Procurement of Wood and Paper-based Products

Did you know only 10 percent of the world's forests are certified? By purchasing certified forest products, you send a message that your company supports sound forestry practices and that you buy responsibly. That's exactly what companies like American Airlines, FAO Schwartz, Rand McNally, Wal-Mart and others have done by saying "yes" to SFI, the Sustainable Forestry Initiative®.

SFI is a forest certification program that integrates the perpetual growing and harvesting of trees with the protection of biodiversity and water quality. It's grounded in science and endorsed by leading conservation groups, such as The Conservation Fund, American Bird Conservancy, National Fisheries Institute, Wildlife Habitat Council and many more. It's also endorsed by government procurement systems in the United States, Japan and the United Kingdom.

All of Weyerhaeuser's U.S. timberlands have been independently certified as meeting the SFI standard. (Incidentally, they also have environmental management systems registered to the ISO 14001 standard, and the land we manage in Canada meets the requirements of the Canadian Standards Association.)

If you're responsible for sustainable procurement, you might benefit from ordering a free copy of Sustainable Procurement of Wood and Paper-based Products (nominal shipping costs apply.) The resource kit explains SFI and many other sustainable procurement standards, and was produced on behalf of the World Resources Institute and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development.
